Cannan outlines sugar tax plans

Childhood health strategies to receive a boost

The Treasury Minister's promised a boost in funds for childhood health strategies once a new tax is brought in next year.

In the House of Keys this morning, Alfred Cannan was questioned about the introduction of a sugar tax on soft drinks on the Island.

A similar levy has been brought in across the water in a bid to cut sugar consumption.

Nutrition experts have praised the tax being implemented in the UK as a positive step in tackling obesity.

However, the sugar tax has been met with opposition by those who believe manufacturers of soft drinks will pass on the levy to consumers.
