First aid won't be added to Manx curriculum

No plans for compulsory training in Island's schools

Manx pupils won't be given compulsory first aid training at school.

Plans were announced earlier this month to make first aid part of the curriculum for primary school students in England.

However, the Island's Department of Education, Sport and Culture has told Manx Radio it has no plans to do the same here.

Many Manx schoolchildren do have the opportunity to take part in first aid, life saving and CPR courses through St John Ambulance, swimming lessons and other third sector bodies at their schools.

The DESC also stressed that the Manx curriculum states teaching must contribute to pupils' education in health, although how this is taught is left for each school to determine.
