First aid to be made compulsory in UK schools - should the IoM follow suit?

St John Ambulance hopes to teach first aid to as many children as possible

After ten years of campaigning, first aid will become a compulsory part of school curriculums across the UK in 2020 - but should the Isle of Man follow suit?

St John Ambulance and a local MHK think so.

Last year, St John offered free first aid training to year six pupils in 27 schools across the Island as part of a community project.

It included teaching children basic first aid and how to make a 999 call.

After securing funding this year, thanks to the charity's 'It's a Knockout' event, St John Ambulance is now hoping to build on what it has started.

The move has the support of Douglas Central MHK Ann Corlett, who says making first aid compulsory in schools is, for her, a no-brainer:
