Fine for uninsured driver who rolled grandmother's car

20-year-old guilty of driving without due care

A Ballasalla man who crashed his grandmother’s car after driving it without due care and attention has been fined £1,000.

Jake Plant, of Ballamodha Straight, rolled the VW Polo onto its roof on Braaid Road in St Marks on 1 August.

At Douglas Courthouse the 20-year-old also admitted having no insurance for the vehicle.

Representing himself Plant told the court the car had skidded but he could remember little about the incident apart from being upside down.

He explained to Magistrates that he thought his insurance policy covered him to drive other vehicles but it didn’t.

Endorsing Plant’s driving licence with seven penalty points they told him: "It’s always worth checking – it only takes a few minutes. It sounds like you were lucky not to be seriously hurt."

They also ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £50.
