Douglas man accused of causing Tromode chemical spill

Incident caused nine-hour road closure

A Douglas man allegedly responsible for a chemical spill that saw a Tromode road shut for nine hours has appeared in court.

Sixty-four-year-old Neville Alfred Marshall of Conister Road appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He’s charged with having a dangerous load on a vehicle on Ballafletcher Road on 12 August, but hasn’t yet entered a plea.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing the allegations relate to a truck carrying hazardous chemicals.

Fire crews in specialist gear were called out to Ballafletcher Road just after 1pm on 12 August after three crates spilled from a heavy goods vehicle.

They contained potassium borate, hydrogen peroxide and caustic soda – leading nearby residents to be told to stay inside amid concerns for their safety.

Defence advocate James Peterson asked for an adjournment to allow time for his client to instruct him.

Mrs Hughes bailed Mr Marshall in the sum of £500, and he’s next due to appear on 16 February.
