Domestic Abuse incidents on the rise

Figures from FOI request by Manx Radio

It's been revealed the number of incidents of domestic abuse on the Island is rising.

Figures were released by Police yesterday (Thurs 19), following a Freedom of Information request by Manx Radio.

The total number of incidents rose from 460 in 2016 to 515 last year - that's almost a 12% increase.

The figures also distinguish between male and female offenders, with victims overwhelmingly female.

Home Affairs Minister Bill Malarkey confirmed in Tynwald this week that domestic violence will be the focus of two new bills, following the campaigns of local charity 'Safe, Strong, Secure'.

Manx abuse legislation has come under the spotlight following a case earlier this year.

The charity described the sentence as "very disappointing", and it caused members of the public to call for tougher penalties.

The data only includes reported cases, however, and police commented that distinguishing between victim and offender wasn't always black and white."
