Registered habitat covers 12 per cent of Island
A man has been fined £1,200 after illegally burning an area of heath without a licence.
Forty-two-year-old Henry Joseph Bridson, from Dalby, admitted setting fire to registered shrubland near Dalby Mountain on 10 February.
On Monday at Douglas Courthouse he became the first person to be prosecuted under the Heath Burning Act 2003.
Around 12 per cent of the Island is covered in registered heath which is made up of shrubs like heather, blaeberry and western gorse.
It plays home to the highest density of breeding and wintering hen harriers in the British Isles.
