Council considers number plate recognition tech

Move to stop commercial dumpers using Amenity Site

Automatic number plate recognition technology (ANPR) could be introduced at the Eastern Civic Amenity Site, to clamp down on those dumping commercial waste.

The committee tasked with running the site, made up of members from the Douglas, Onchan, Braddan and Garff local authorities, is investigating the measure.

Staff at the facility challenge users they suspect of bringing in non-domestic rubbish and can issue bans or warnings to repeat offenders.

Rules including limits to rubble bags and vehicle height restrictions are used to deter businesses from using the site for waste disposal.

At its June meeting, the committee mulled over how the amount of commercial waste disposed at the site could be reduced.

Members agreed to have the number plate technology examined by officers, and to consider the move again after more research has been gathered.

It was acknowledged any use of the automatic number plate recognition technology would have to comply with data protection rules.
