Cannan pleased MERA & salary support will continue for 12 weeks

Minister confirms one new case of coronavirus

The Treasury Minister hopes extending government's Salary Support Scheme (SSS) for three months will help provide a platform for businesses to bounce back from lockdown.

Speaking at a media conference today (20 May) Alf Cannan welcomed the continuation of this scheme, as well as the Manx Earnings Replacement Allowance (MERA), for a further 12 weeks.

This week Tynwald approved the extension to help businesses which are still suffering as a result of Covid-19.

MERA will continue to be offered until 20 September, and those who'd previously applied for a grant under the business support scheme will be allowed to apply from 1 June.

It's understood 2,000 people have received around £5 million from MERA.

The Salary Support Scheme will continue for 'three extra claim periods' until 17 August.

Mr Cannan also confirmed there's been one new case of coronavirus confirmed today, meaning the total now stands at 336, with 10 active cases.
