Ban on having animals breached by Pulrose man

Pulrose man fined after admitting charge

A Pulrose man convicted of animal cruelty breached an order banning him from having animals just 18 months later, a court’s heard.

Forty-two-year-old Richard William Miller of Alder Road appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted breaching the 10-year disqualification order at his home on 8 July last year.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson said Miller had been convicted of mistreating hawks and dogs in January 2018 and banned from keeping animals for a decade.

Police officers and MSPCA staff went to Miller’s home last July and discovered a large number of pigeons in cages in his garden along with a corn snake inside the house.

The hearing was told the pets belonged to Miller’s partner and there was no evidence they’d been mistreated in any way.

However, Miller accepted he’d been left in charge of them while his partner was out and so was in breach of the order because he had custody of the animals.

Magistrates ordered him to carry out 100 hours community service and Miller will also pay £550 compensation to the MSPCA to cover the costs of housing the animals.
