#MRWomenToday: Women's suffrage - the Manx story

On #MRWomenToday this Tuesday Beth and Ben reflected on the 100th anniversary of some women being given the right to vote in the United Kingdom.

The Isle of Man had extended voting rights to some women 37 years earlier in 1881, but this fact is very often neglected in the coverage. Today we asked you why you thought that might be.

Beth also visited the grave of a Manx born woman who was instrumental in the suffrage movement.  Sophia Goulden and husband Robert were the parents of, among other children, Emmeline Pankhurst.  Sophia (née Craine) was born in the Lonan area and is buried alongside Robert in the new Braddan cemetery.

We spoke to Christine Cowley from 'The Friends of Sophia Goulden' about just how important Sophia is as an historical figure. Find out more about the group here.
