Victims 'should be given choice'

A local woman who fell pregnant through rape has hit back at comments by 'pro-life' campaigners.

Deborah McCann says the views expressed by Life Isle of Man - that victims should not be given abortions - are 'archaic'.

Malcolm Newton appeared on Mandate on Monday  as a public consultation on reforming Manx abortion laws drew to a close.

Under the current legislation, rape victims are entitled to a termination only if they report the crime to the authorities.

But Deborah, who was attacked at knifepoint aged 17, and later underwent an abortion, says there should be no caveat.

Deborah said: 'The way victims of rape seem to have been singled out by the pro-Lffe campaign, I frankly find offensive. And the intimatiion that women would fake the fact and would say "Oh, I've been raped"  just to get an abortion,  I just think is an insult and whoever who believes that or says that about anybody frankly needs to examine their conscience and their soul"'.
