Rugby: Douglas retain Manx Cup title in season finale

Vagas claim Manx Plate on finals day at Mooragh Park

Report by Dave Christian:

There were no surprises in the Manx Cup Final with favourites Douglas putting in another solid performance beating a dogged Ramsey side 25-0 - Ramsey though can take some succour from their first half performance and trailed just 5-0 at the break.

Liam Kirkpatrick finished off a Si Hoddinott break in the twenty third minute to give Douglas their lead.

Just after half time Cal Dentith dived in to double their advantage; Kirkpatrick then got his second off the back of a powerful scrummage and when Cark Markl-Fearns ferreted his way over the line just shy of the hour mark, the cup was won.

Sam McCord crossed fifteen from the end to put some gloss on the scoreboard and confirm that the Cup remains at Port-e-Chee for another season.

Vagas claim Ravenscroft Manx Plate

Vagas wrestled the Plate from holders Southern Nomads with a 69-10 win the cup final curtain raiser.

Tony Quinn put Nomads ahead early but tries from Cal Donnell, Reece McAllister, Matty Jones and two from Cole Donnelly more than redressed the balance - conversions from Dan Bonwick and Reece McAllister left Vagas 31-7 ahead at the break.

In the second half Donnelly completed his hat trick and there were further tries from Bonwick (2), Rob Pease and Mark Oldfield and four more conversions from the Bonwick & McCallister double act.

Nomads did manage another score when Tom Collister crossed but it was little more than consolation.

The game finished early following a leg injury to Vagas’ Daryn Thompson and everyone in Manx Rugby wishes him a full and speedy recovery.
