Steam Packet says safety is number one priority

Company is "fully compliant" with all fire regulations

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company says safety is always its number one priority.

A spokesperson from the government-owned ferry operator says it is "fully compliant" with all fire regulations, and continually reviews best practice.

It follows a fire onboard a ship carrying some electric vehicles off the Dutch coast.

The statement in full: "Safety is always the number one priority of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The Company is fully compliant with all current local and international regulations for the prevention, detection, containment and extinguishing of fires on its vessels. Voluntarily, the Company has introduced policies and procedures in excess of the requirements in a number of areas, and continually reviews its own and industry best practice to ensure the safety of its customers, crew and vessels."

Reuters reports that the Fremantle Highway was carrying 498 battery electric vehicles, but that the cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation has been launched.
