The home affairs minister says he understands the possibility of ID checks for sea travel is a contentious issue.

A public consultation on the potential move has been launched, and you have until February 12 to have your say.

The department has already said it favours the checks being introduced, as did the chief constable in his most recent annual report, to improve the Island's national security.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson says if introduced, the measure should be seen as a pre-emptive one, rather than to tackle some big problem:
