Peel Commissioners planning to appeal Marine Parade decision

But what do residents want to see in the sunset city?

Peel Town Commissioners are planning to appeal against a decision to block the redevelopment of Marine Parade.

Proposals for a new community hub have been rejected by the Planning Committee which expressed concerns that the designs did not cater to the needs of the wider community.

Last year the commissioners submitted their plans to regenerate the promenade and provide more facilities for the community.

They hoped to develop the site to provide a new café, crown green bowling clubhouse – with two indoor lanes – and public toilets.

If approved the facilities would have been built on the current tennis courts which the local authority said were ‘underused’ and could be better located elsewhere.

The multi-sport area – currently home to a basketball court and a former skate and BMX park – was also intended to be relocated.

The Marine Parade site lies within an area designated, on the Peel Local Plan, for tourism and is outside of any conservation area.

However those plans were quashed by the Planning Committee which deemed them contrary to the site’s tourism designation.

There was also criticism of a lack of details about replacement facilities for the multi-sport area.
