Panorama special airs tonight

Isle of Man firmly under spotlight

The first Panorama programme promising to lift the lid on the secretive practices of the global finance industry will be aired at 6pm on BBC One this evening.

The Isle of Man is one of several offshore jurisdictions expected to be under the spotlight.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle has been interviewed by the programme's team.

He also held a press conference with local media and stated allegations of abusive VAT avoidance are being made by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists - the organisation behind the Panama Papers disclosure.

The story centres on the importation of aircraft into the European Union and the VAT treatment of leasing arrangements.

A Freedom of Information request shows those importing aircraft into the EU via the Island were repaid almost £800 million in VAT by the Manx Treasury over the last six years.

The second Panorama programme is an hour long and is on BBC One tomorrow evening at 9pm.
