'Meals on Wheels' fears dismissed

Minister Kate Beecroft

Impact assessments to be carried out

Fears elderly people will be left isolated by a funding cut for 'Meals on Wheels' services have been dismissed by the Health and Social Care Minister.

From January 12 next year, Age Isle of Man - which has provided the catering for the last decade - will no longer receive a £150,000 per year subsidy from government.

Kate Beecroft today (Tues 21) told Tynwald it would be 'reckless' to continue subsidising the service with taxpayers money when other providers were offering the same.

She insisted an impact assessment was being carried out to ensure the vulnerable in the Island continued to receive 'Meals on Wheels' from alternative providers.

Mrs Beecroft added the decision had followed a consultation with social care professionals.
