MHK's call for work permit debate to be stopped amid Tesco takeover

Shoprite sells all nine stores to supermarket giant

Debate on relaxing work permits should be stopped following the announcement that Shoprite has sold its stores to Tesco.

That’s the opinion of two politicians who have responded to the confirmation that the supermarket giant is taking over.  

The nine outlets will continue to trade as Shoprite during a transition period and will be rebranded over the next nine months.

But Onchan MHK Rob Callister told Manx Radio he’s concerned about the impact on Manx jobs and Manx food producers:

Government says it welcomes Tesco’s commitment to retain the ‘substantial’ number of staff who are employed by Shoprite however it adds a number of jobs are ‘at risk’ outside the stores.

Tynwald is due to discuss the idea of suspending work permits, across all sectors, at the sitting in November. 

However Douglas South MHK Claire Christian, who has claimed Tesco has signed 21-year leases on all premises, says there is no way permits should be relaxed now:
