73 year old found over twice the legal limit
A 73 year old man who drove whilst over twice the legal alcohol limit has been banned from driving for three years.
Alexander McKaig pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before the Deputy High Bailiff.
The court heard police had attended McKaig's house in Port St Mary on 29th August, after a member of the public had reported him on suspicion of drink driving.
A breath test gave a reading of 84 microgrammes - the legal limit is 35.
He claimed he had only drunk one glass of wine at lunchtime that day before driving - but had consumed a bottle of wine after he had arrived home. However, he later admitted he had been "economical with the truth"
His advocate said McKaig was in very frail health and on medication and whilst he accepted he was over the limit, had only driven a very short distance. He was a man of integrity, who did lots of volunteer work and was embarrassed and ashamed of his actions.
Whilst giving him credit for his guilty plea and co-operation with the police, Mrs Hughes said she had to take into account the very high reading and in addition to the ban fined him £900 plus £515 costs.
