Inmates scoop 29 prizes for their prison grown vegetables

'Some of these prisoners have never had rewards' says deputy governor

Inmates from the Isle of Man Prison have scooped 29 awards after showcasing their Jurby-grown vegetables.

They entered 40 categories at the Royal Agricultural Show and Sulby Horticultural Show – collecting 10 first place prizes, 10 second and nine third.

All of the produce was grown by the prisoners – most of whom have no previous experience of gardening.

The vegetables - which include carrots, cabbages, lettuce and squash – are used within the onsite kitchen; extra meals are also cooked and donated to the Isle of Man Foodbank.

Martin Phillips is the deputy governor and told Manx Radio it highlights the positive impact of rehabilitation:
