Braddan Commissioners asking DOI for £3.5 million for leisure centre development

It says the cost could also be borne by the ratepayer

Braddan Commissioners are asking the Department of Infrastructure for more than three million pounds to meet the cost of the leisure centre development in the Parish.

It's now due to be completed on 17 November, slightly later than planned, and the cost of it could still have an impact on the ratepayers.

In addition to asking the DOI for funding, Commissioners Chair Andrew Jessop says they are looking to charge businesses in the area a 'special' rate to 'cushion' a potential increase residential rates.

He says this is subject to the government's agreement, and the commissioners could put the rates up by 20 percent for all properties but this would be a 'worst case scenario':

Known as 'The Roundhouse', it was due to be completed in October but due to the cost of materials and inflation the finishing date has been pushed back.

The centre is located on Strang Corner Field and will have a 500m walking and exercise track, children's play area, sports hall and exercise facilities.

A beauty therapist, pharmacy, dental practice and cafe are also going to be based at the centre.
